Most replacement quotes are built around square footage of new concrete. The old driveway is a line that says “remove existing,” or it is not a line at all. That is where the problems hide.

They often do not treat legal C&D disposal as real scope. Concrete is heavy. Rebar is mixed in. It cannot go in household trash, and it cannot legally be dumped in the woods or buried under the new pour on a Melbourne lot. If the quote never mentions haul-off, someone is either eating that cost later or skipping the legal step.

They often do not check thickness and steel before they bid. A four-inch slab with light mesh is a different job than a thicker mid-century driveway with rebar, a thickened street apron, and a sidewalk tied in. Guess thin, find thick, and you get a change order, or they rush the breakout and chew up your landscaping.

They often do not own the access problem. Downtown Melbourne and Eau Gallie lots are tight. Fences, irrigation, mature trees, and a neighbor’s driveway sit inches off the work. A pour crew with a mixer on the street is not set up the same way a demo crew with a breaker, a machine, and a haul truck is.

And if demo is bundled with the pour, you do not have a clean, independent pad. Delay the pour and you are stuck with a half-broken driveway and a pile. When demo is its own contract, the old slab is gone on a date you control.

None of this means pour-new shops are the enemy. It means demolition is a different trade. Hire it that way.

Access is half the job

A wide, open lot in West Melbourne is one kind of driveway removal. A narrow Eau Gallie lot with a fence on both sides, a live oak over the apron, and two cars that still need somewhere to sit is another.

We scope access on the quote visit. Can a machine get to the slab, or is this handwork out to the street? Where does the haul truck sit? What stays, irrigation, a city sidewalk, the garage slab you are keeping?

Tight lots take longer. They also take more protection. We cover and work around what is staying. That is the difference between a clean job and a claim.

If the apron or a sidewalk section sits in the right-of-way, we flag it before we start so the city piece does not stall the rest of the driveway.

What we leave for the next contractor

When we are done, the old driveway is gone. Concrete and steel are off the property. The area is graded and ready for the next trade, a new pour, pavers, or a different layout.
